Corner Sinks

The type of sink you place in either the kitchen or the bathroom may be decided by the amount of space that you have available. This is certainly a consideration in many bathrooms where space is definitely at a premium.

A great way to maximise the amount of space available in a room is to use the corners, a part of a room that often becomes dead space if not properly utilized. Corner sinks have been designed to make use of the small bathroom corners and there are also larger kitchen corner sinks that also allow you to better use the layout of your room.

No matter whether you are looking for a porcelain bowl or a vessel sink that will provide you a little more avant-garde flair, they are all available as corner sinks.

In the bathroom you may want to choose between a couple of different styles of sinks where the bowl is a single unit. Your corner sink may either be a wall mounted style of sink or a pedestal sink. It is also possible to buy a corner vanity unit that will hold a small corner sink that will also provide you with the option of choosing your faucet layout as well.

In the kitchen the only place that provides an appropriate place for the sink to sit is in the corner of the room. This doesn’t mean that you will have to make do with a small and inadequate sink arrangement. There are many kitchen corner sink units that are quite expansive and will provide you with a great deal of room for dish washing. Of particular note are the granite and stainless steel corner sinks that are set up with a bowl on either arm of the counter providing you with ample room.

Not only do these corner sinks come in large versions but some of them are also very stylish. It is worthwhile browsing carefully through all of the options available to you, particularly if you are looking to be inspired by something.

You’re not limited to a single size or depth with a granite sink with a full range available to cater for any kitchen needs. As well as a drop in look you have the more preferred undermount fixture. In most cases the counter and the sink will both be made of granite and so it makes sense to ensure it flows easily from one part of the house to the next.

It is possible, depending on the quality of the water that flows into it, that the sink can become stained with a white limestone-like deposit. This can happen with constant use and the water isn’t as clean as it could be. What is left behind is a chalky deposit that can become difficult to remove if it is left there for too long.

One method of cleaning a granite kitchen sink is to scrub it down with a mixture of hot water and white vinegar. Make sure the scrubbing is done with a soft scourer such as a Scotchbrite pad. A firm scrub should bring the sink back to near original condition.

Granite sinks are a terrific option as a low maintenance choice that also has the distinction of looking mighty fine into the bargain. Not only are granite sinks available as the standard single or double models but they can be bought as corner kitchen sinks too.

Visiting a few stores, either bricks and mortar or online, is a definite option that will quickly allow you to see just how many different types o granite kitchen sinks for sale there are.

Installing An Undermount Sink

An undermount sink can be a beautiful choice for the home. These are the sinks that are underneath the countertop so you don’t see the lip of the sink. It’s a style that highlights the beauty of the countertop giving the edges a sharp, clean appearance. These sorts of sinks can really set countertops made of marble, stone and granite extremely well.

The nature of the undermount sink means that the surrounding countertop is easy to keep clean. You can simply sweep crumbs straight into the sink without having to worry about them becoming caught on the lip of the sink.

The sink needs to be installed properly for it to be leak-free. It can last for decades without one leak. The undermount sink should be installed using silicone caulk and very strong epoxies. Then they stay in place with metal anchors that are attached to the underside by glue.

To install the undermount sink, it is best to have a professional actually cut the hole. It should be noted that undermounted sinks should only be installed under a solid surface, a countertop made of wood or a laminate finish would constantly run the risk of getting wet and this would lead to water damage. For this reason specialist stone cutters would be needed to perform the job of cutting the hole for the sink, something that is best left to the experts.

Use the silicone caulking around the hole just cut and then position the sink in its’ proper place. Then the screws should be tightened. Any caulking should be wiped off if it oozes out.

This is the best time for have the faucet holes drilled while working with the underside of the sink. Then turn everything over and attach it to the base counter. The manufacturer's directions should be followed if screws, clips or adhesives are needed.

Now that the sink is where you want it, the drain needs to be installed next. Plumber's putty should be used on the bottom of the drain and then needs to be pushed into the drain opening. Tighten the lock nut to hold it in place.

The undermount sink project should be put on hold overnight to let the putty and caulking set up. The next day you can attach the water supply lines to the faucet stems. Now the S trap and drainpipe should be attached to the bottom of the sink and drainpipe.

The undermount sink is ready for use, and is an attractive addition to the home. When the water is turned on, there should be a good check for leaks. If there aren't any, then the job is done.

The undermount sinks come in a single, double or even triple bowl style, so there are many choices for that special look in the kitchen. They are also available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. You’re not going to be limited simply because you want the clean lines of a sink hidden below the level of the countertop.

An Apron Kitchen Sink

When flicking through the kitchen sink brochures or the home renovation magazines you will be sure to find a large, deep kitchen sink with the font side exposed, nestled in the bench cavity. This is an apron kitchen sink and it is a strong reminder of the past giving the kitchen an overwhelmingly traditional ambience.

The obvious characteristic of the apron kitchen sink is the method of installation which has it surrounded on three sides by the counter top area but with the front edge exposed it allows you to stand right up to the edge of the sink without having to lean over the unused countertop space.

If you’re going for the traditional or country kitchen style then the apron kitchen sink will be one of the front-running options to choose from. The fact that the other name by which it is known is a farmhouse sink indicates well and truly the origins of the style.

Apart from the style qualities that they bring to the room, there are a few other features that many people find appealing. They are a compact sink but, because of the steep sides which make it look rather like a box, they can hold a lot of dishes for washing. But the sink doesn’t take up a lot of bench space. The depth of the sink almost makes using it a luxury.

The materials that you usually find these sinks made from a quite attractive, simple yet effective. Among other materials you will find apron kitchen sinks made from fireclay ceramics, stainless steel, copper or cast iron. All of these types of Kitchen Sinks make impressive statements because you see more than just the inside sink face.

In general, these sinks are also very durable with the quality of the surface able to withstand just about any heavy blows that may be applied to it.

The range of apron kitchen sinks available is remarkably wide with feature designs on the front end of the sink ensuring that what would have otherwise been a plain wall of white is instead an eye-catching centrepiece for the room. That being said, the contrast of the white front edge of a sink against the surrounding cabinetry also makes the sink a feature of the room.

An apron front kitchen sink gives you a traditional look that will fit in nicely with both a contemporary surrounding and the typical country style kitchen. You get a solid, deep and extremely functional kitchen as well as a focal point that draws the eye the moment you walk into the room.

It isn’t surprising that a product as simple and elegant as the apron kitchen sink has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. The adaptability to any style of kitchen has allowed a wide range of renovators the chance to stick one into their new kitchen. Other attractive and very functional types that you might be looking to consider include corner kitchen sinks.
