Should You Convert Your Attic To A Loft?

Creating and converting a loft into a home is not a simple task but it can have very rewarding results for those willing to take the project on. Lofts are often created as a result of needed space in home, and are built as an extension to the home. This type of project can be expensive as well as time consuming if doing it yourself especially if a room has to be added on to the home. If getting the proper room addition permitting is difficult then it is possible that an existing room will need to be converted to a loft.

The attic is a great place to start when planning a loft with existing space in the home. It is already a large wide, open space, with electrical wiring already in place. Planning the use of the space can be a tough task but when planned properly, a cold, wide open area of emptiness can become a warm and cozy extra bedroom, office, or family room. The first thing to do is contact a contractor and have them come take a look at the space to help determine if the desired loft is an option and to get an estimate of the expense of the conversion.

Once it has been determined a loft conversion is possible, it is time to start the planning phase and to decide what type of additions are desired or required. These decisions should include what is needed for temperature control, electrical wiring, plumbing, and to finish out the walls or ceilings.

One little detail that should also not be forgotten is what kind of attic ladder you are going to install to give the easiest access into the attic.

Once the design of the room is determined, next comes the planning for the color of the paint for the walls and any window coverings needed. Designing and converting an attic into a loft can be a lot of work and a rewarding experience well worth the time and expense.
