How To Save Money When Designing Your Home's Interior

It's pretty exciting to buy a home of your own as you start to have lots of thoughts about what you are going to do in terms of decorating.  There will be so many different ideas spinning around your head and sometimes it's difficult to know what to do.  However here are perhaps some general tips when it comes to decorating your home.

Price - First of all you really want to think about the price of everything.  There's no point in buying everything you want if you then are unable to afford the mortgage repayments.  You will also want to think about the financing options that companies offer you.  Often you don't have to pay any money upfront but will you be able to pay for everything when the time comes to settle up?

Another issue about price is that many companies make their products look really great in their brochures and in their showrooms.  The result is that they look really amazing and you think that the price tag is worth it.  However there are many other companies who sell cheaper products just as good but they maybe don't present them just as well.

Durability - There are a lot of things that you can buy but they aren't necessarily that durable or suitable for the purpose.  For instance, if you are looking for basement flooring options, you should go for a hard flooring such as concrete or slate rather than wood or carpeting.

Fashion - Interior design is just as much a victim of fashion as anything else and what is really trendy today might not look quite so trendy in a few years time.  Do you really want to be lumbered with products you hate because they are no longer fashionable?  So be very careful about what's in fashion.  For instance if big bold patterns are in fashion today, you might want to avoid buying too many items like this.  Instead opt for more simple and classic items that won't date as quickly.

Although the above advice could be described as simplistic, people still make lots of mistakes when buying home accessories.  If they just sat down and thought about it a bit more they could save themselves a lot of money and hassle in the long run.

Slate Tile Flooring for the Kitchen

Slate tile flooring for the kitchen area can make your kitchen look very classy and sophisticated. It is not like vinyl or peel-and-stick tile flooring at all – it looks much classier and is perfect for those people that want to pull together the look of their room.

The nice thing about slate tile flooring for the kitchen is that you can install it yourself if you like do-it-yourself projects. It will save a lot of money on installing the tile if you are capable of placing it on the floor yourself. You will probably have to purchase the correct tile glue to install it, but it’s not an overall difficult process to place it on the floor.

Slate tile flooring is quite easy to clean. You don’t have to worry about people spilling stuff on the surface as it is a breeze to clean up. A floor steamer can usually be used for regular cleanings of the floor tile or a paper towel can be used for basic spills. Usually, floor tile doesn’t need to be cleaned all that often however it should be cleaned regularly just to ensure that the surface is looking fresh and clean.

This kind of flooring is a lot more durable than vinyl or peel-and-stick tile flooring. Have you ever seen the scratches that those other types of flooring can get in them? Slate tiles don’t usually have those issues because they’re much more durable.

Slate tile flooring doesn’t have to be ultra expensive. If you have a rather large kitchen, you may decide to only do half of the kitchen with the slate tile flooring, and the other half with vinyl. The area that is used the most should get the slate tile flooring placed on it. The look of the kitchen floor is more cohesive if you install all slate tile flooring on it, but if expense is a big issue, then just install it on half of your kitchen floor.

How to Clean Leather Rugs

If you are thinking about buying a leather area rug you may be wondering about any special cleaning requirements these rugs have. In many ways it depends on the type of rug you have purchased how you will care for it. Some are tougher than others but, for the most part, these rugs are relatively problem free as long as you look after them well. Here are some tips on how you might go about cleaning a couple of different types of leather rugs.

Cleaning Patchwork Leather Rugs

Rugs made up of pieces of leather are generally the toughest kind and will be very durable. They can even be buffed back to a shine with shoe polish and treated much like a leather handbag. You should only ever give them a gentle vacuuming however to remove surface dust and use the upholstery tool which is more gentle on your rug than the usual tool you use to clean carpets.

Cleaning Shag Rugs Made of Leather

Leather shag rugs are a slightly different kettle of fish. They are made of strips of leather which are firmly knotted to a backing material. The main problem with these is that dirt and dust gets lodged between the strips of leather and can cause your rug to wear and to look grubby if not properly cleaned. The easiest way to clean this type of rug is to pick it up and give it a good shake although this can be a bit difficult with a very large rug and you might need assistance. Failing this, use your vacuum cleaner as above but it will probably not be as effective at removing grit and grime.

Dealing with Spills and Stains

If you spill anything on your rug, mop it up immediately and dab at the stain with a soft cloth wrung out in warm water with perhaps a little mild detergent added if necessary. If you are not able to remove the stain like this then consult a specialist carpet cleaning company who should be able to resolve the problem.
