A Vessel Faucet Will Make A Bold Statement

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

If you have been to the grand opening of a local day spa or new construction home open house recently you will have noticed the influx of new designs that are available for today’s bathrooms. The vessel faucet is one of the trendiest items to have hit the interior design market in the last couple of years and with good reason.

Vessel faucets are a rebirth of an ancient design of gathering or catching water. Prior to pressurized plumbing these faucets were used in conjunction with pump handles to manually draw water. Although today you can re-invent this style with your own personal tastes in many configurations.

Design themes for the faucet and sink combinations run from a purely classic style, contemporary styling, vintage like old world or Victorian, and even earthen stone styles to give a warmer appearance to your boudoir. The vessel faucet is separate from the sink or bowl and the number of combinations are only limited by taste and personal choice.

Your bathroom sink is the most important focal point when it comes to visitors and you will have every one of your friends and relatives green with envy when they see your new interior design creation. A bathroom vessel faucet would make a terrific addition to just about any style of bathroom.

But before purchasing one of the works of personal plumbing art you should consult an interior designer at your local home improvement store or hire a consultant to help you chose what look and functionality that you want for your home or office.

You will find these faucets made from most common metals such as chrome, brass, bronze, nickel copper. The choice you make should be determined by the fittings that already exist in the room.

Plumbing is also a consideration especially if you chose the vessel faucet that extends from the wall instead of the vanity cabinet or bowl itself. There will have to be modifications to accommodate the hidden pipes in the wall. Also ask the plumber who is quoting your installation if any building permits for the city or county are required.

One final option to consider are the faucet handles. The most common is the single throw lever handle and is used mostly with cabin or counter mounted installations. The double or dual throw handles faucets are typically used for the wall-mounted configurations. Separate handles are also available that are separated by horizontal space in your wall-mount installation. The later is a bit pricier than most but really makes a bold design statement and creates a more unique look.

The cost of ownership can be a little higher than standard bathroom fixtures due to the intricate installation process. If a pipe leak or some other behind the scene plumbing failure happens then having to rehire a plumber and possibly a drywall or tile person to reseal the repair could be prohibitive.

Why Buy An Automatic Faucet?

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Once typically seen only in commercial applications, automatic faucets are now becoming more and more popular for residential use as well. They fit into the designs present in many of today’s homes, and automatic faucets offer several benefits that traditional home faucets do not. Automatic faucets are available for use in bathrooms as well as kitchens, and the installation process is no more difficult than that for traditional faucet fixtures.

Automatic faucets have become standard in public restrooms because they are convenient and easy to use. Why not experience the same convenience at home? They work simply by waving your hand in front of or underneath a sensor, depending upon the model you have. The water begins flowing automatically, and it also shuts off automatically - reducing waste. The ease of use is also great for getting young children to wash their hands. As an added benefit, most models allow you to set the water temperature. This makes hand washing much safer because the risk of scalding can be reduced or eliminated.

Sloan Automatic FaucetHands-free automatic faucets offer many hygienic benefits when compared to traditional faucets. Studies have shown that there are more germs present in sinks and their surrounding areas than in many other areas of the home. With an automatic faucet, there is no longer any need to come in contact with nasty germs and bacteria present around the sink. Homeowners are able to wash their hands without needing to touch the faucet afterwards to turn the water off.

From a design perspective, automatic faucets are extremely attractive. They are available in several different designs and styles, and they fit in well in any design style. Because there are so many different styles available, you can find an automatic faucet that fits into modern, contemporary homes as well as in more traditional styles. They are available in a variety of finishes as well, making them a perfect match in any home. Most models are powered by a long-lasting battery rather than needing electricity. Because of the lack of wires or power cords, they fit seamlessly into any bathroom or kitchen.

Toto Automatic FaucetManufacturers of automatic faucets include Kohler, Zurn, Toto and Sloan and each make a line of sleek and efficient products.

For example, the Toto line of EcoPower products provides the hands-free technology over a wide range of products in shiny chrome plating that will appeal to many people.

Kohler Automatic FaucetOne of the things that the Kohler company emphasizes strongly is the need to conserve water and has a lot of water saving tips on its website. One of the methods you can save water is by using the company’s touchless faucets. As well as looking particularly stylish, these faucets come with a range of features apart from simply being automatic. They are equipped with built-in aerators to give you substantial water savings right off the bat. Some of the faucets also come with a temperature mixer so you don’t have to waste water getting the temperature right.

In all cases, there is a lot of technology going into the automatic faucets that are being produced. Hygiene is a significant consideration that is driving their manufacture and sales, but the broader impact on our environment cannot be underestimated either.

A Brushed Nickel Faucet

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

If you’re choosing a new set of faucets for the kitchen and aren’t particularly keen to install shiny stainless steel units, you may prefer to go with the more muted option of a brushed nickel faucet. You might find that the duller option suits your other style choices more fully and gives you the opportunity to spotlight a different part of the kitchen.

If the kitchen sink you have chosen is not a bright shiny affair, sticking a faucet that looks overly shiny would look completely out of place. This is where the brushed nickel faucet option would be more suitable. It will complement the sink you choose from a white ceramic finish to a matching brushed nickel sink.

Brushed Nickel FaucetThere are a few benefits you get from using brushed nickel faucets and they mainly have to do with the lower amount of maintenance that will be required to keep them clean once you’ve begun using your kitchen. Due to the matt finish of the faucets any smudges or fingerprints that you may get on shiny surfaces will not show up as readily on the brushed nickel surface.

If the faucets do become stained with some kind of soap scum or water stain, an effective way of cleaning them is to dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and wiping the faucet clean. You should find that any stain is quickly removed.

The range of types of brushed nickel faucets is as varied as other faucets so you won’t be narrowing down your choices because you want to get this type. All major manufacturers stock them in either one handle or two handle configurations. If you want a lever style that is reminiscent of the old world style of faucets they are available as are the contemporary styles and designer faucets.

How you match your faucets to your sink is a matter of personal taste and style. It would be perfectly okay to put brushed nickel faucets over a stainless steel sink. However the result would probably look as if one or the other was out of place. You don’t want to draw the eye to an area of the kitchen because something looks like it doesn’t belong.

Make sure you spend plenty of time browsing the kitchen showrooms and take your choice in faucet with you as you walk the showroom floor. Holding the faucet up over each sink that takes your eye will ensure that you will come up with a combination that will look suitable.

Copper Kitchen Faucet

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

It wasn’t all that long ago faucets served a single purpose in the kitchen and that was to get water from the pipes into glasses, pots or to use for dishwashing. These days, faucets play a much bigger role in the look of the kitchen.

The styles, sizes, shapes and finishes used on kitchen faucets can change the entire tone of the room. One of the types that have made a comeback in many households is the copper kitchen faucet. Copper has long been the type of metal carrying water from the mains to the faucet, but it has largely been unseen in the house for many years now. This is beginning to change.

The color and style of copper kitchen faucets take you back to early days when copper fixtures were commonly seen in houses. Antique copper faucets add a touch of elegance to the kitchen and set the tone for a grand antique style. No matter what the actual style the faucet is made, copper gives it a warm charm that harks back to a simpler time.

One of the interesting things about copper is that the qualities of the patina changes over time. As the metal ages it can change color from a bright and shiny finish to a darker, duller shade. This is often a process that many people embrace although others may be caught by surprise that their faucet has started to change appearance.

You can prevent or slow down the oxidation process to take place by treating your copper faucet with a wax finish. You will, however, have to regularly reapply the coating. Failing to do so will allow the inevitable change to take place. Alternatively you may want to look for a copper faucet that has been treated with a lacquer finish.

If you want to be more in control of how your copper faucet is going to look in the coming years you can buy them pre-weathered. These are aged pieces of copper that have been manufactured especially to take advantage of the dull look.

Although copper kitchen faucets give the impression of an old world style, the faucets that are made with the metal today take advantage of modern trends. Mixer faucets and other single handle set ups are available and still manage to give the appearance of an antique faucet.

The most popular style of antique copper kitchen faucets is the old compression faucet design with a spigot flanked by two handles, one for the hot water and the other for cold. This type of faucet is preferred because it looks more rustic and true to the country kitchen style.

A Roman Tub Faucet

There are simply so many choices of faucets for a bathroom available that it pays to get an idea of the various types of options that are out there before you walk into a store and find yourself dazzled with choice. Mixers, hand washers, wall mounted fixtures and more could all be part of the new look you’re after, or you may be looking for something that will give you some older world appeal.

When installing a new bathtub you will also have to decide on a new set of faucets that will complement the new tub. One of the choices that you might go for is a touch of elegance in a Roman tub faucet. These faucets are designed to go with a Roman style bathtub, but they will look good in a range of bathroom settings.

Roman tub faucets are a traditional look for a modern setting, although manufacturers are creating some very fresh and new looks with their Roman tub faucet lines. A Roman tub faucet is different to what we might consider a regular bathroom faucet in that it is mounted on the horizontal surface. Most bathtub faucets are vertically mounted on the wall above the tub.

You can expect your faucets to remain looking good and lasting well beyond the 20 year mark. Naturally, because the mounting is a specialized one you’re going to be limiting your choices in bathtubs, requiring one that can take the mounting, but that should only require an awareness that you will be looking for a Roman tub.

In general when you buy a Roman tub faucet they come with two handles for the hot and cold water controls. There is quite an array of choices available that can give a traditional or more modern charm, depending on your preference. A nice feature with many styles of Roman tub faucets is the faucet handles which are lever handles to give that old style charm and appeal. For a more regular style handle you can opt for the traditional four prong handles.

The hardware in your bathroom can sometimes be thrown in as an afterthought but its these small flourishes that really sets the bathroom apart from others and can make or break the look in a design perspective.

The major manufacturers all produce an impressive line of Roman tub faucets with names such as Pfister, Grohe, Delta, Kohler and Danze all reputable brands to look out for.
