1 Gallon Stoneware Jugs

Stoneware jugs were manufactured in a variety of sizes as storage vessels that were capable of withstanding the occasional bump or knock. The sizes ranged from the quite small pint and half pint jugs up to larger 5 gallon jugs. Somewhere in the middle of all this are the 1 gallon stoneware jugs that are the ideal size for everyday use.

A 1 gallon jug is large enough to contain a sizable quantity of liquid while still being small enough to be manageable when having to carry it around. It should also be light enough to pour without having to strain too much. For those who wish to decorate using their stoneware jugs the single gallon jugs represent a suitable size to be placed on a display shelf without appearing overly large and dominant.

One gallon jugs have been used as decorative items by some of the most important art pottery factories. The features that have been added to the sides and front of the jug, including attractive glazes and painted finishes, makes them just as valuable as decorative items as they were to those who used them as storage vessels.

Some of the most collectable stoneware jugs originated from the various distilleries who distributed their whiskey using them. These types of stoneware whiskey jugs feature the company details and makers markings on the front and bottom giving them added points of interest. It is possible to find 1 gallon stoneware jugs made by such notable names as McCormick Platte Valley, Glenmore, Henry McKenna, The Western Stoneware Company.

Beehive Stoneware Jugs

Pottery jugs are available in a number of different shapes and sizes although there is a reasonably standard shape that many of them are made in known as the beehive shape. The beehive jug was one of the earlier shapes in which they were made and can usually be found in larger sizes such as 3, 4 or 5 gallon jugs.

The use of beehive jugs as whiskey jugs came down to a number of factors such as the ease with which they could be thrown and, therefore, the cost associated with making them. Because they were usually hand crafted you will find that there are slight variations in each jug even though they might be made by the same pottery factory and contain whiskey from the same distillery.

Collecting glazed beehive jugs has become an increasingly popular pastime, particularly for those looking to add a decorative feature to the room. Antique beehive jugs can be purchased reasonably cheaply and with the glazed finish adding a shiny appeal they can sit in pride of place to add texture and substance to the room.

Many of the different types of beehive jugs were originally manufactured as storage containers for transporting whiskey from distilleries and so they will contain markings identifying the distillery and the year of manufacture. Collectors should be able to use these identifying marks to determine the age of the jug.

Rowe Pottery Beehive JugNot all beehive jugs were created to store whiskey with the style also used by a number of art pottery houses to produce some stunning works. The bulbous shape provides an appearance of great solidity and the broad front of the pot provides an appropriate canvas for decorative glazes to be applied. The jug displayed here to the right is a Rowe Pottery beehive jug that was part of the Historical Collection 2004 from Rowe Pottery Works.

Whether you prefer the look of a slip glazed jug or a salt glazed jug or the most popular two-toned look that incorporates both types of glaze, beehive jugs are made using all methods. The two jugs pictured towards the top of the page are examples of a slip glazed beehive jug (on the right) and a salt glazed beehive jug (on the left).

One of the most recognised and collectible brands of beehive pottery jugs are Red Wing. Red Wing jugs bear a distinctive image of a wing (as well as a few other distinctive designs) on the front and are still available in reasonably solid numbers on the secondary market.

There is a lot more information about beehive jugs as well as many other jug types on our stoneware whiskey jugs page.

The Horseshoe Stoneware Jug

The Horseshoe stoneware jug was an invention by a man named Henry Stiles as part of his process to come up with a pouring spout that would allow liquid to pour freely. For this reason the jug is also sometimes referred to as a Stiles Jug. The idea was to come up with a jug with a spout that would allow air to flow into the jug while liquid was being poured out, thus improving the smoothness of the liquid’s flow.

What is unusual about the shape of the horseshoe jug is the rounded sides that house the spout to allow the jug to “roll when poured” and the flat sides that permit the jugs to be stacked for storage. Around the time that the jug was first being manufactured by The Cleveland Pottery Company, demand for jugs was high and ways of maximising kiln space during firing and then storage space during transportation was a key feature. The design of the Horseshoe jug meant that every inch of space was being used to its fullest potential.

Although the Horseshoe Jug, or Stiles Jug, was originally designed for its potential to pour more smoothly, it was later marketed by The Cleveland Pottery Company as more of an artistic object. The jugs were being produced with heavy glazes and given more of an Art Nouveau look with decorative handle designs. Decorative features such as sponged paintwork on the sides and inscriptions in fancy lettering have also made them more collectable as things of beauty. Some of these inscriptions have suggested that they could also have been used as whiskey jugs.

Today, stoneware horseshoe jugs may be looked upon favourably for their unusual and distinctive shape when compared with other old pottery jugs. The old pottery jugs with a horseshoe design would sit well in company with a collection of stoneware pottery whiskey jugs as an important part of the history of stoneware, particularly Ohio stoneware. This should be seen as just another way in which you can decorate with stoneware jugs and create a very distinctive style from it.

Save Money With Denby Seconds

There are many ways in which you can go about buying a dinnerware set that will not only look good on your dinner table but will also serve you and your family well over a number of years. Some people will look for a specific pottery brand, safe in the knowledge that the pottery they produce is reliable and the company will be around if they ever have to replace a broken piece.

The only thing that may cause you to balk at buying one of the bigger names is the cost that is involved. Buying Denby pottery, for example, means that you are buying a reliable product and there will be plenty of after sales support available because the company is so large. You will also have a great range to choose from too. The price of some of the Denby dinnerware sets is a little higher than other pottery and this could turn you off buying it.

There is a way of still being able to buy Denby dinnerware but save some money doing it.

Buy Denby seconds.

A second is a piece that has had some slight variation take place during the firing or glazing process. This might mean that the glaze color is slightly lighter or darker than it is supposed to be or there are some imperfections in the finish that have resulted in the occasional spot.

Another way to pick up Denby pottery at a lower price is to pick up discontinued Denby patterns. Many of these pottery items are secondhand or used but it is possible to find some absolute bargains and there are many different retired Denby pottery patterns to choose from.

You will find the following discontinued Denby pottery patterns available for sale here.

Arabesque

Avignon

Bakewell

Baroque

Blue Jetty

Blue Linen

Bokhara

Boston

Calm

Camelot

Canterbury

Castile

Chantilly

Chatsworth

Harlequin

Marrakesh

Metz

Romany

The point with these seconds is that apart from the look of the finish, the Denby pottery itself is just as high in quality as any other piece. The pottery will still be as durable, it will still be as capable of being placed in the microwave or the dishwasher and it will be just as strong for everyday use as other pieces.

The price of a Denby second is going to work out to be cheaper, sometimes significantly so. However, you cannot be guaranteed that you will be able to buy a complete set of a certain collection nor will there be as many copies of a certain piece. Seconds are unexpected differences and so they are not something that the manufacturer is going to attempt to repeat.

It is definitely worth looking through the available list of Denby seconds, though. You might find some absolute bargains on pieces where the flaws are incredibly minor – perhaps even undetectable.
