If the room itself is quite small it will be necessary to adjust the standard sizes of sinks in order to maximise the use of the space. A great way to do this is to buy and install a corner sink for the utility room.

Utility room sinks may be made of hard wearing plastic or stainless steel. Buying a corner sink allows you to make the most use out of a small area while still maintaining the bowl space that you require in a well functioning utility sink. It is important that you get the depth of the bowl that you require from a standard utility room sink, it will simply be placed at an angle to the rest of the room.

Alternatively, corner fit utility sinks are available with a flat end on either end of the sink that will allow the entire sink to be installed butted up against the wall. Again, this is to maximize the floor space while also providing you with the largest possible sink in a potentially small room.

The main aim with any utility sink is to ensure you have a bowl that will be large enough to perform all of the necessary cleaning duties that take place in the room. Just because the floor space in the utility room is smaller shouldn’t mean that you won’t be able to get the washing done effectively.

You can buy Franke granite sinks in either single bowl or double bowl size. The size of a single bowl topmount/undermount sink measures 15-3/4” x 21-3/8” on the interior of the bowl and 22-3/16” x 25-3/4” as the overall dimension. The depth of the sink measures 9 1/8”. The Franke granite sink colors for this particular sink are white, slate and champagne.

The Franke granite double bowl sinks are also available although there is a larger range of these sinks with two sinks available as topmount / undermount options and a third sink that can only be installed as a topmount sink.

The first double bowl sink comes with only a single faucet hole and the overall dimension of the sink itself is 33” x 22”. The depth of the two bowls are 9” and 8” respectively with the larger of the bowl sitting on the left measuring 14 1/8” x 18 1/2” while the smaller bowl, the one on the right, measures 14 1/8” x 15 ¼”. This particular model, which is model number OSL3322-1, is available in three colors, slate, white and champagne.

The other topmount / undermount option in the Franke double sink range also comes with a single faucet hole although you can order the sink with an extra 3 knockouts if required. This double sink differs from the previous model in that the left and right bowl sizes are identical, each measuring 16” x 14” and with a depth of 9”. The overall dimension of the sink is the same as the previous sink, measuring 33” x 22”. The colors that this sink is available in are graphite, polar white and ivory.

The final double sink in the Franke range is an undermount sink that features bowls that are the same size measuring 14” x 15”. The depth of the sink is 8” which is not quite as deep as the other double sinks. The overall dimension of the sink is the same though at 33” x 22”. The term under mount refers the type of installation as it relates to the counter or bar top. Whereas a top-set sink is installed from above the counter top and rests in place, the under mount sink is installed from below and attached by means of clips or brackets. These brackets may be factory-installed bolts or spot-welded clips that are fastened to a wide flange that borders the sink basin. The installation consists of attaching the sink to the underside of the counter top with the accessory mounting parts such as nuts and washers or additional clips. The basic requirement for this installation is the alignment of the sink drain opening with the existing waste or drain line stub out and allowing ample space to make a proper drain connection.

The under mount bar sink is especially suited for situations where the sink will receive a lot of activity such as in a bus-boy station or a night club. The reason for using the under mount sink in these situations becomes apparent when considering there is no raised rim at the counter surface as is the case with top set bar sinks. The raised rim does not allow water to ship or be wiped into the basin as easily as with an under mount sink.

The under mount bar sink can be evaluated and shopped through on line sources or by visiting a plumbing fixture supply or home improvement center.

Blanco granite sink
