This is a very successful pattern from Denby-Langley with a large part of the success able to be attributed to the shade of blue that has been used on the sides of the bowls, cups and saucers as well as the table items such as the cream and sugar set.

The merger of seven stoneware pottery companies in 1906 formed the Western Stoneware Company of Monmouth Illinois. The seven companies that formed the merger were The Monmouth Pottery Company, Weir Pottery Company, Macomb Stoneware Company, Macomb Pottery Company, D. Culbertson Stoneware Company, Clinton Stoneware Company, and Fort Dodge Stoneware.

Making this merger a very fruitful one for all concerned was the fact that each company brought a pottery specialty to the new company. This gave the Western Stoneware Company an impressive range of design styles.

The range of products produced by The Western Stoneware Company included basic utilitarian stoneware vessels such as bowls, butter churns and crocks as well as more decorative quality pieces such as lamps, planters and artistic pieces.

The distinctive feature of the Western Stoneware crocks is the blue stamped company logo featuring a maple leaf which remained fairly consistent over the years with only slight variations made.

The Western Stoneware Company jugs and crocks are part of a larger range of jugs that can be found for sale elsewhere on the site. For other fine and unusual jugs including whiskey and moonshine jugs and crocks of all sizes and condition take a look at the stoneware jugs page or head over to the page featuring McCormick Platte Valley whiskey jugs, Glenmore Whiskey Jugs and Henry McKenna Whiskey Jugs.

The Appeal Of Fulper Pottery

The company now recognised as Fulper Pottery was purchased in the 1860s by pottery worker Abram Fulper after Samuel Hill, the owner and founder of Hill Pottery died in 1858. The company produced various items of earthenware and stoneware and continued to do so after Abram’s death when it became known as Fulper Bros. In these early years the company produced household crockery and tile items that were made for domestic use.

Fulper Cats Eye VaseIt wasn’t until William Hill Fulper II took over the running of the company that it made the move into art pottery. The company first began producing vases and jugs with simple solid glazes and were sold in the street outside the factory. The popularity of artistic pottery collecting assured the company of its success as private collectors and museums were buying large quantities of pots.

The company contracted Dr Cullen Parmelee to produce glazes that were inspired by rare Chinese glazes in a bid to produce art quality pottery. Many of the creations that came from this project included Fulper glazes that were known by names such as Famille Rosee, Seladon, Chinese Blue and Claire de Lune. They are part of the well known Fulper Vasekraft pottery line.

Many of these glazes were difficult to mass produce with any consistency and they were very costly leading to the discontinuation of many of them. By 1910 William Fulper hired ceramic engineer Martin Stangl to create new glazes and shapes which moved the company from producing pottery whose shapes were inspired by Oriental influences to shapes that were Arts & Crafts styled.

Fulper Flambe Long Neck VaseOne of the design projects that came about from Stangl’s work was the Vasekraft pottery lamps that became extremely popular. These lamps were expensive even back when they were first produced from 1911 through 1918. The wider Fulper art pottery grew in recognition thanks to the careful advertising campaigns that were undertaken and the products were to be found in department stores across the country.

The highest quality glazes that were used in these years were particularly beautiful and unusual giving even the most common forms widespread appeal.

In 1929 Stangl acquired the company and continued to produce art pottery until around 1935 although the output was much smaller and the quality was not up to the work that was produced in the earlier years. After 1935 Stangl moved the focus of the company from art pottery to the production of dinnerware.

The Fulper markings varied over the years with the changes in their appearance the only real way one can get an idea of the date each piece was made. Here is a rough guide of what to look for:

1909 - 1916 – A vertical ink-stamped rectangular label stating Fulper was typically found along with the form name and glaze.

1913 – 1929 – Any Fulper pottery that was sold by the Prang Art Supply Company were marked with a vertical Prang stamp.

1916 - 1922 - Raised vertical Fulper inside a rectangle

1922-1928 – An ink-stamped vertical Fulper in inside an oval border that is sometimes referred to as a racetrack mark.

1928-1935 - Impressed horizontal Fulper without a rectangle or oval around it, occasionally with a three- or four-digit model number; found on all Art Deco designs

There are still many opportunities to purse the collection of Fulper pottery with many fine pieces available to create a valuable collection. The Fulper vase and Fulper bowl forms in various glazes are extremely desirable.

We have a selection of classic items of Fulper pottery jugs for sale which should give you an opportunity to start or build a collection that can become significant and will provide decorative opportunities throughout the home.

Collectors of crocks and stoneware jugs should take a look at the range of Glenmore Whiskey jugs available on display here. The jugs date back to around the 1940s and those that can be found in good condition make particularly valuable additions to a collection. The two-tone glaze and the shape of the jug makes this a very attractive and distinctive looking jug.

Part of the importance of these types of whiskey jugs is their place in history as they mark the progression of the country’s distilleries from the early containers to today’s glass bottles. Finding the various different sizes of Glenmore whiskey jugs will be a challenge in itself.

Glenmore Whiskey Jugs are part of a larger range of jugs that can be found for sale elsewhere on the site. For other fine and unusual whiskey jugs, moonshine jugs and crocks of all sizes and condition take a look at the stoneware jugs page or head over to the page featuring McCormick Platte Valley whiskey jugs, The Western Company crocks, Ohio Whiskey Jugs and Henry McKenna Whiskey Jugs.

Decorate With Rookwood Pottery

Rookwood Pottery was founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Nichols Storer in Cincinnati, Ohio as a kind of pottery club for women. The aim was to provide a means of providing the opportunity to continue her love of her hobby of painting blank tableware. With the help of some glazing specialists and artists the company grew from a small affair into a company that mass-produced pottery on a huge scale.

The very secret of the success of Rookwood Pottery came from the extremely high production and quality standards with which the pieces were made.

There are a number of standard looks that are instantly recognized as Rookwood pottery. This was done intentionally by Storer who was trying to give the company an identifiable appearance. The standard glaze that was used on many pieces involved a glazing effect that included deep gold, red and orange over dark brown to create a very high-gloss finish.

A very common glaze that became synonymous with the Rookwood company was the vellum glaze which involved a matte light blue glaze over a light-colored clay. The majority of the vellum finishes were used for landscape scenes.

Another of the more commonly found glazes that was made very famous by Rookwood was the matte glaze. This is a flat glaze that provided the opportunity to appreciate the texture of the clay. Matte glazed pottery was generally found in a sea green color.

Keep a look out for the range of tiger’s eye glaze pottery, the first crystalline glaze developed in the US. This is another style of glaze that was developed by Rookwood, some say it was accidentally created but the result is stunning nonetheless.

The handmade appeal of the Arts & Crafts pottery produced at Rookwood has also meant that there are many pieces that can be found in this popular style. Although many expect to see pieces made in a matte glaze categorized as Arts & Crafts, the truth is the style ranges far wider and comprises many unique and wonderful pieces.

The company began marking its pottery in 1886 with a reverse R and P logo. To indicate the year the piece was manufactured a flame was added around the logo for each year since then until 1900. This means that by 1900 the RP logo was surrounded by fourteen flames. By 1901 the use of Roman numerals took over to date the pottery and continued until production ceased.

One of the most celebrated artisans of the company was Japanese ceramicist Kataro Shirayamidani who began work with the Rookwood company during the 1880s. His pottery is considered some of the finest created and commands extraordinary prices today.

Some of the other celebrated decorators who were involved with Rookwood pottery designs include Arthur Conant, William P McDonald, Carl Schmidt and Albert Valentien.

The company continued producing high quality pottery for over half a century before going bankrupt in 1941 and then finally closing its doors in 1967. During this time the company followed and mastered many different design styles such as art nouveau, art deco and Victorian. The earliest examples of Rookwood pottery are possibly the best and certainly they are the pieces that are most vigorously bid on.

The company has made it a little easier than others to collect by inscribing factory markings on the base to indicate the name of the company and the date of manufacture. Shape numbers were also impressed on the bottom of each piece with numbers running from 1 to 7301. Following the shape number you will then find a letter that indicates the size of the piece. These letters run from A thru F with A indicating the largest size and F the smallest. Also added were other characters to indicate the color or type of clay that was used. A “P” stands for soft porcelain, “S” means it is a special piece, “V” stands for vellum and trial pieces were marked with a “T”. Pieces that did not turn out perfectly were marked with an “X” and were sold at a lower price. They were also able to be identified by artist marks as well.

Decorate the Home With American Art Pottery

There are many ways to decorate the room, either by putting together single pieces in a way that they form a cohesive look or by buying a collection that has been designed with the intention of creating a particular look. Although the collection option will provide you with a quick result, putting together a room piece by piece is a far more interesting way to go about it. Along the way you might come across some spectacular finds that may slot into the room perfectly.

Roseville Pottery VasePottery provides the decorator with an enormous range of styles, colors and sizes and can have the rustic traditional look or the more finely wrought decorative appeal.

One of the significant choices you will have at your disposal is the range of incredible American art pottery that you can use to turn you home into a showpiece of some of the most spectacular examples of quality pottery available.

The great thing about using art pottery to create a decorative feature in your home is that there is no right or wrong way to go about displaying it. Whatever takes your eye and appeals to your sense of aesthetics is the right choice.

Some of the biggest names in American art pottery include Cowan, Muncie, Niloak, Teco, Roseville, Rookwood, Grueby, Van Briggle, Newcomb College, Weller, Fulper, Haeger and there are many others that provide some of the most amazing shapes and patterns.

Whether you would like to see a decorative vase on the floor (such as the beautiful Roseville pottery vase on the right) or a set of pottery bookends up on the mantle or a decorative bowl (such as the Rookwood pottery bowl pictured below) holding colored gravel or potpourri or a figurine made by one of the major pottery firms you can add them to the home and they will provide texture and color that is unequaled.

Rookwood Pottery BowlNaturally, if you are planning on putting your valuable art pottery out on display you are going to have to find spots where it is out of the high traffic parts of the room. Similarly, you will have to take into consideration the possibility that young children with very curious minds and fingers that have to touch everything, are possibly going to be using the same room. Make sure you have taken the proper precautions to either allow them to coexist of have a plan to keep your valuable pottery safe.

Unfortunately, as with many other fields where value lies in the authenticity of certain work, there is a problem with fakes flooding the market. If you are buying pottery from any of the well known potteries be aware that there are fakes around. Make sure the Roseville vase you have your eye on is real and not a replicated version from China. Get to know the markings of not only the real pieces but also those of the fakes.

If you need some help in picking up on the frauds you should visit the site dedicated to uncovering fakes by the American Art Pottery Association.

Denby Castile Dinnerware

Sometimes plain can be very attractive and that is definitely the case with the Denby Castile dinnerware collection. The pale blue that dominates this pattern is serene, icy and beautiful and the glossy finish helps to make the thick ringing effect around the plates a particularly impressive look. The Castile pattern was produced from 1975 until it was discontinued in 1991. Browse through the selection of Denby Castile dinnerware below.

While the salad and dinner plates may look plain in style with the use of pale blue as a border feature around the edge of the plates, it is the style of the cups and saucers, creamers and sugar bowls that the pattern truly shines. Each of these accessories displays a feeling of delicateness thanks to the thin handles that curl gently and the slightly rounded bodies of the bowls themselves.

The Denby Canterbury dinnerware pattern made good use of a floral feature on the face of the plates and bowls and then provided a more sedate plain single color for the other items of tableware. The use of bands or rings around the bodies of the bowls and jugs gives some of the collection added visual appeal making this quite an attractive collection.

Not all of the pieces from the Canterbury collection will be available at the same time. The number of bowls available made by Rookwood is nowhere near as high as the wide selection of vases. They were certainly an essential part of the wider range of products that were produced but the greater demand for vases and larger items meant that the bowl was not made in such prolific numbers.

Used as a centerpiece, a Rookwood bowl will provide a stunning feature in the middle of a table. The quality of the glazing in many of these pieces lies testament to the high regard with which the company was held when it was in business producing fine pottery.

One of the nice things about buying a Rookwood bowl from the point of view of someone who is trying to start a collection is that they are not prohibitively expensive. There are quite a few where the price of the Rookwood bowl is reasonable enough to pick it up and display it in your home without being scared to death that it might get damaged or broken.

Decorating with Fulper pottery will provide you with the perfect opportunity to add a vase or two to your home. The colors and glazing style will add a significant look to any room into which it is placed and it is very likely to be used as a focal piece.

Glazes to look out for include the drip glaze that gives the impression the glaze is slowly making its way down the side of the vase to puddle at the base. The company was also responsible for a flambe glaze that simply sparkles with the impression that the vase has experienced some kind of burnt effect and the pots that carry this glaze are particularly beautiful.

Another very well known and popular glaze is the crystalline glaze that speckles and provides a wonderfully textured appearance.

The Arts & Crafts style was introduced when martin Stangl was hired and his work is showcased very well with many of the earlier Fulper vases.

When buying Fulper pottery online you should ensure that the vase or bowl that you buy is authentic. There have been cases of fake Fulper vases being offered for sale, some of them quite convincing. Make sure you are aware of the Fulper forms that were created and the brand markings on the bottom of the pots and that the vase that is offered for sale bears those marks.
