Slate Tile Flooring for the Kitchen

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Slate tile flooring for the kitchen area can make your kitchen look very classy and sophisticated. It is not like vinyl or peel-and-stick tile flooring at all – it looks much classier and is perfect for those people that want to pull together the look of their room.

The nice thing about slate tile flooring for the kitchen is that you can install it yourself if you like do-it-yourself projects. It will save a lot of money on installing the tile if you are capable of placing it on the floor yourself. You will probably have to purchase the correct tile glue to install it, but it’s not an overall difficult process to place it on the floor.

Slate tile flooring is quite easy to clean. You don’t have to worry about people spilling stuff on the surface as it is a breeze to clean up. A floor steamer can usually be used for regular cleanings of the floor tile or a paper towel can be used for basic spills. Usually, floor tile doesn’t need to be cleaned all that often however it should be cleaned regularly just to ensure that the surface is looking fresh and clean.

This kind of flooring is a lot more durable than vinyl or peel-and-stick tile flooring. Have you ever seen the scratches that those other types of flooring can get in them? Slate tiles don’t usually have those issues because they’re much more durable.

Slate tile flooring doesn’t have to be ultra expensive. If you have a rather large kitchen, you may decide to only do half of the kitchen with the slate tile flooring, and the other half with vinyl. The area that is used the most should get the slate tile flooring placed on it. The look of the kitchen floor is more cohesive if you install all slate tile flooring on it, but if expense is a big issue, then just install it on half of your kitchen floor.

How to fit a Dishwasher into a Tiny Kitchen

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

In this day and age, many people live in apartments that have way-to-small kitchens.  If this sounds familiar to you, then read on.  It is tough to even prepare meals in them, let alone fit another bulky appliance into them.  The fact is that most people in western countries have grown accustomed to using a dishwasher.  To go back to washing dishes by hand in the sink can feel like getting tossed back to the Stone Age for some.  One problem people face is that their kitchen doesn’t have a dishwasher, and there really isn’t room for one.  If you are in this situation, you have a few choices.

First, you need to decide whether you need a full sized dishwasher or a small, tabletop unit.  The large ones will be able to handle almost anything you can toss into them, but a compact tabletop dishwasher will only be able to hold 4 place settings.  If you are just looking for a cheap dishwasher that is simple to hook up, I would definitely go with a portable tabletop unit.  There is no plumbing to be done, since they just get hooked up directly to the faucet on the kitchen sink.  The downside to them is that they are a bulky appliance about the size of a microwave, and will take up space in your kitchen.  Many people solve this problem by putting them on a rolling cart, which can be simply pushed next to the sink for use.

If you don’t like the thought of having a bulky appliance hooked up to your sink, or have a lot of dishes to wash everyday, you will most likely need a large dishwasher.  If this is the case, an option is to remove one of the lower kitchen cabinets and install a slimline dishwasher.  These units are designed to fit into smaller spaces than normal dishwashers. You will need to hook up the water intake and drain tubes to the plumbing, but any good plumber should be able to tackle a job like this easily.  You can even do it yourself if you have the inclination.

Pantry Cabinets Can Be Bought Or Built

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Pantry Cabinets come in all shapes and sizes whether for the business or home. If building or remodeling there will be a cabinet to choose. Many types of material can be used when building a cabinet. They are generally kept in the kitchen but are used anywhere in the house.

In fact they are very common in other rooms of the house. With the different sizes they can hold any item that they need to. Custom made pantries can be expensive but worth it. Many types of wood are used to create these pantry storage cabinets.

The cabinets were created from storage chests that were seen in Japan. There are the most handy when used in a room with little or no storage room. While they were created for manors and large home they are now used in almost any house and room.

These cabinets can be bought from the store or on the Internet. The advantage in attending a store is that you can see the furniture before you take it home. It will be hand designed just for the owners specifications.

The ones from an online store are generally already made, but occasionally there are some that will make them when you ask. But you won't be able to see what has been assembled until it has been delivered to your home.

You will still enjoy the pantry when you will receive it. Many different woods are used to create them, like elm, oak, and cherry. And those are only a few of the woods that are used. If a rare wood is used the cabinet will be more expensive. You can select the amount of doors that are installed on it.

Any one of the pantry cabinets will be enjoyed in the home. They will hold any items you like and can be concealed with the doors.

Expanding The Kitchen Island

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

If you already have a kitchen island but are still running out of bench space you may be at a loss as to what to do to solve your problem. The answer may be as simple as expanding the kitchen island to meet your needs. This may require some work if you are going to get it done yourself but it will save you the expense of having to buy a larger kitchen island.

Expanding the kitchen island will involve careful consideration of how much floor space you can afford to lose and then, so you won’t have to go through the process again, how big you will need the island expanded to. With any luck the expansion will only need to occur on one end of the island, although the chances are to make it look symmetrical, it will have to be expanded at either end.

Depending on the flooring that you have you may need to remove some of the floor covering so the larger island will fit and look like it has always been there. You will then have to begin the construction of the framework of the new cabinet. With any luck you can use a portion of the existing cabinetry.

A new countertop to fit the larger island will have to be installed and then the finishing touches may be added such as the kick plate etc. The color and finish of the expanded kitchen island will be determined by the rest of the room, hopefully it will blend in with the rest of the kitchen décor.

Kitchen Island Designs

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

An effective method of creating more counter space in the kitchen, particularly in an overly large kitchen, is to have a kitchen island installed. There are a surprising number of kitchen island designs to choose from that can serve all kinds of functions. The kitchen is the busiest room in most households and a well designed kitchen island can very well become the hub of the home.

Rather than entering into the possibility that a kitchen island will not meet the needs of a bustling family, take the view that you can have a kitchen island built would not only solve this issue for you but also give your children an area to sit and do home work while you prepare dinner or to expand a natural gathering place in your home. Having an island designed and built is a cost effective way of expanding your kitchen’s ability to manage the traffic of your family and friends.

Kitchen island designs are very similar to each other. There are two options for design and those are the kitchen island cart and the fixed island. Of course the difference between these two is the ability to move them. Each design has general dimensions that can be increased or decreased according to the needs of the specific customer. These changes of course will change the amount of storage space that is available but not the overall function of the island. The size of your kitchen will likely determine if you want to be able to move the countertop to accommodate guests or have a permanent countertop to accommodate your family.

So what are some of the more popular kitchen island designs? Let’s start with the permanent islands and you can go with a simple small countertop with under bench storage, something that might complement a traditional L-shaped kitchen. In a larger kitchen you might go with an oversized square kitchen island that will give you extended cabinetry underneath and perhaps a cooktop in the center.

Another popular kitchen island design is the island that accommodates seating on one or a couple of sides. This creates the perfect gathering place in the kitchen and turns it into the heart of the home.

Floating kitchen islands take a number of different forms and starts with the small cart, moving up to a butcher’s block and up to a more extravagant mobile table. These are perfect for the smaller ktichens where you only need the extra coutner space on a temporary basis.

The cost of course, will depend of the extent of material and complexity of the design. Islands construction can be done from most any type of wood material as long as it is sturdy and has some durability. The countertops also vary in style and material. A few of the most common countertop materials include laminate, butcher block, marble and granite. The cost will also be determined by availability and whether or not the island is custom built.

A feature that is a popular addition to the kitchen island is a sink, which will require some plumbing to be done before adding the cabinets. A stove top, particularly one that sits flush with the rest of the counter is another nice feature for the island. However adding this to the kitchen island may negate some of the other possible functions such as using it as a servery or a place where children can sit.

Islands that are already fabricated can be purchased right away and delivered or installed with minimal planning. Many of us have specific needs, though, and for this reason they will decide to install a custom island that requires more planning, a solid design and lengthy discussion with the builder. If the island will be added to the existing kitchen and unmovable, serious considerations will need to be discussed and planned before construction begins. Moveable islands are a great deal less complicated but if building, will need to be given the same considerations so that style and efficiency are well thought-out.

As with all new features the kitchen island design that you choose should attempt to meet the needs of the entire family. Safety issues must be considered as well as the most efficient use of the space.
