Laminate Flooring – A Economical Alternative To Traditional Hardwood Floors

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

In recent years, installing a new hardwood floor has become one of the most popular home decorating projects. Everyone seems to love the beauty, warmth and style that a wood floor adds to any home. Sadly, solid wood floors are not cheap, and many homeowners find that the cost for a new floor is beyond their budget. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive solution – laminate flooring.

Laminate flooring is a flooring product that closely imitates the look and feel of an actual hardwood floor. Not to be confused with engineered wood flooring, which consists of real wood, laminates are manufactured from fabricated materials.

Several different layers make up any one laminate plank. Each layer is made from a different material. Starting from the ground up, the first layer is a backing layer. This helps hold the entire plank together and provides a moisture barrier and a strong foundation. This is normally made from melamine.

The next layer is the core and contains the bulk of the material. This layer can be made from several different materials, but HDF (High Density Fiberboard) seems the most commonly used. This layer is normally impregnated with some mixture of melamine and resins that adds to the water resistance of the plank.

The next layer is the image layer. This is a high-definition photograph of a piece of wood that the laminate flooring is meant to imitate. It is possible to imitate any flooring material in addition to wood, including stone or tile. This gives the homeowner the ability to install an “exotic” wood floor for a fraction of the cost of the real thing.

The top or final layer is the wear layer. This layer is made from melamine and aluminum oxide and is very durable. Some manufacturers go as far as to emboss this layer to simulate the wood grain that would be found on a traditional wood floor. This makes for a very realistic design that is difficult to tell from solid wood without closer inspection.

The cost difference between laminate and solid wood flooring can be significant. Hardwood flooring is traditionally sold by the square foot. Most hardwood flooring costs between $4.00 to $8.00 per sq. ft. Some exotics can cost a great deal more. Laminate flooring can usually be found starting at $1.50.

Installation costs for solid wood are usually higher. In most cases, a professional flooring installer will be needed to insure a proper installation. Most homeowners can install a laminate floor by themselves.

There are substantial cost savings involved when choosing laminate flooring over solid wood floors, For those homeowners looking for the time-honored beauty of a hardwood floor, without the sometimes prohibitive costs of a traditional hardwood, laminate wood flooring is the ideal solution.

How To Save Money When Designing Your Home’s Interior

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

It's pretty exciting to buy a home of your own as you start to have lots of thoughts about what you are going to do in terms of decorating.  There will be so many different ideas spinning around your head and sometimes it's difficult to know what to do.  However here are perhaps some general tips when it comes to decorating your home.

Price - First of all you really want to think about the price of everything.  There's no point in buying everything you want if you then are unable to afford the mortgage repayments.  You will also want to think about the financing options that companies offer you.  Often you don't have to pay any money upfront but will you be able to pay for everything when the time comes to settle up?

Another issue about price is that many companies make their products look really great in their brochures and in their showrooms.  The result is that they look really amazing and you think that the price tag is worth it.  However there are many other companies who sell cheaper products just as good but they maybe don't present them just as well.

Durability - There are a lot of things that you can buy but they aren't necessarily that durable or suitable for the purpose.  For instance, if you are looking for basement flooring options, you should go for a hard flooring such as concrete or slate rather than wood or carpeting.

Fashion - Interior design is just as much a victim of fashion as anything else and what is really trendy today might not look quite so trendy in a few years time.  Do you really want to be lumbered with products you hate because they are no longer fashionable?  So be very careful about what's in fashion.  For instance if big bold patterns are in fashion today, you might want to avoid buying too many items like this.  Instead opt for more simple and classic items that won't date as quickly.

Although the above advice could be described as simplistic, people still make lots of mistakes when buying home accessories.  If they just sat down and thought about it a bit more they could save themselves a lot of money and hassle in the long run.

Travertine Bullnose Tile For Trim

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

If you are planning to add a travertine tiled shower to your home there are a few things you need to think about.  Of course the first is what shade of travertine stone you are going to use.  Generally, these tiles are fairly light in color but there are differing shades available which can greatly affect the look and feel of your shower and actually your entire bathroom.  The old rule of thumb for interior design is, the smaller the space and the less light available the lighter the wall covering.  This gives a feeling of size that a dark color can not provide.

Another question to ask is how you will integrate the shower tiles with the remainder of the bathroom.  Will you have a tiles shower stall with the tiles stopping at the door?  Will you tie in the travertine shower tiles with the same or complimentary tiles on the countertop?  Or are you interested in placing a matching tile on the entire floor of the space and then using that as a natural lead in to the shower itself.  This effect can work very well as it makes the room appear jointed instead of disjointed if you have one type of floor covering, another countertop, and third choice for the shower.

These are all questions to ask yourself but of course no mater what choices you make there is still the problem of what to do with the edges of the tiled area.  Most of the time this done by installing bullnose tile as the last vertical and horizontal course.  You can go here to learn how to bullnose travertine but basically this involves rounding the edge of the tile that will not be laid next to another.  That is, the edge of the tile which is visible at the completion of the job is rounded to give a nice transition from the wall surface to the tiling area.

Answering the questions in this article will help you to end up with a travertine shower you are proud of.

The nice thing about slate tile flooring for the kitchen is that you can install it yourself if you like do-it-yourself projects. It will save a lot of money on installing the tile if you are capable of placing it on the floor yourself. You will probably have to purchase the correct tile glue to install it, but it’s not an overall difficult process to place it on the floor.

Slate tile flooring is quite easy to clean. You don’t have to worry about people spilling stuff on the surface as it is a breeze to clean up. A floor steamer can usually be used for regular cleanings of the floor tile or a paper towel can be used for basic spills. This kind of flooring is a lot more durable than vinyl or peel-and-stick tile flooring. Have you ever seen the scratches that those other types of flooring can get in them? Slate tiles don’t usually have those issues because they’re much more durable.

Slate tile flooring doesn’t have to be ultra expensive. If you have a rather large kitchen, you may decide to only do half of the kitchen with the slate tile flooring, and the other half with vinyl. The area that is used the most should get the slate tile flooring placed on it. The look of the kitchen floor is more cohesive if you install all slate tile flooring on it, but if expense is a big issue, then just install it on half of your kitchen floor.

Marble Mosaic Tile: A Masterpiece

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Marble mosaic tile is an art decoration that is both intricate and colorful. These pieces of art have been around since the 1960s and add a whole new level of creativity to the use of marble in a home or business. Marble stone is taken and cut into very small pieces that are then used to create a masterpiece. These small pieces of stone or varying colors are combined to form portraits, landscapes, patterns, or paintings. Many businesses that specialize in mosaic art are able to take any visual representation of the art pattern or picture that is desired and recreate that out of marble for you. These pieces of art can be many various sizes and can be displayed anywhere. Commonly they are displayed in kitchens and foyers.

As with any type of art it is important to know the maintenance and cleaning required to keep it in top condition. When cleaning these mosaic art pieces the same techniques that are used for marble tile cleaning are sufficient. When cleaning marble it is imperative that only warm water is used. The mild acidic properties of vinegar can damage the stone and should be avoided. The cloth that is used with the warm water to clean the stone should have all excess water wrung out. After wiping the tiles with a damp sponge it is important dry the areas cleaned as soon as possible as marble has a tendency to spot. This easy maintenance technique will keep your art work looking at its best for many years to come.

Marble mosaic art is a unique way to set apart your home or business as you can determine the style and form that will add the quality you want to your setting. Marble mosaic art pieces can add a beauty and elegance to your home or business that will make it stand above the rest.
