Crystal Door Knobs

Friday, May 20th, 2011

The desire to add something special to your rooms can extend to any number of different options, some of them come readily to mind (painting the walls) while others may not be immediately obvious (replacing the door knobs with crystal door knobs). A vital part of successfully performing your own home interior decorating is to take a chance every now and then and choose to place items that you really love in the house. Crystal door knobs might fall exactly under this category.

Crystal door knobs are not going to suit every type of décor and they are not going to appeal to every homeowner, but they are an option that can add elegance to an older style home. They are going to create an impact on those who are not used to seeing such hardware, particularly when most people are used to seeing brass, steel or ceramic door knobs.

Like most products there is a variety of quality when it comes to the various types of crystal door knobs for sale. It is possible to buy cheap versions but if you are going to make a statement with your door knobs you are more likely going to want to use a quality product. In this case you are going to be paying for it.

While the clear crystal door knobs are the most commonly found they are also available in a variety of colors for those rooms that require a little added sparkle. Amber, purple, green and brown crystal door knobs are not unheard of although it is going to require a bold decorative style to pull off anything other than a clear crystal door knob.

In a lot of cases the crystal door knob that you choose is going to be made or broken by the accompanying metal setting and scratch plate upon which it is set. The majority of these types of door knobs are going to be set on a brass plate that may either be shined or dull and the metalwork that has gone into the finish could be the deciding factor of whether you want to buy it or not. Pictured on this page is a crystal door knob with a pewter backing and you have to admit it looks pretty good. It is important, therefore, to pay close attention to the metalwork that comes with each door knob and not just the shape and appearance of the crystal.

Crystal Octagon Door Knobs

If you’re going to use a material as beautiful and flawless as crystal for your door knobs you may as well buy them in a suitably impressive shape. The octagon shaped door knobs are particularly impressive to look at and the facets are perfect for showing off the clear cut of the crystal.

You will find that the octagon crystal door knobs were particular favorites many years ago with many examples of antique crystal door knobs featuring this shape.

Crystal Round Door Knobs

A beautifully classic shape for a door knob is the round knob and when this is presented as a crystal door knob the appearance is even more beautiful. These solid crystal door knobs are most effective when they are given a multifaceted cut with the many different angles showing off the beauty of the material.

One of the very nice things to remember about changing your door knobs around the home from a tired old metal knob to a crystal equivalent is that it is an easy job for anyone to do. You don’t have to be an experienced DIY handyman to remove the old knobs and replace them with the new.

Architects Belfast Guide on External Doors

Friday, March 12th, 2010

A numbers of years ago the only choice of materials for external doors was wood, mainly hardwood. The doors were generally stained or sometimes painted. Wooden doors back then had a tendency to warp and twist with changes in the environment. Increased moisture in the timber would cause the wood to swell and after drying out it contracts. This continuous movement meant that doors sometimes became poor fitting. There was also the regular maintenance required to keep the doors in good condition.

Nowadays things are much better. Wooden doors benefit from modern manufacturing techniques known as engineered doors. The end result is doors that perform much better even in differing environmental conditions. Wooden doors are still very popular and look great on the front of your home.

In addition to better quality wooden doors there are a number of newer materials used for the manufacture of external doors for you to choose from. These additional materials include uPVC, steel and composite materials. Between the various materials there is a vast range of styles offered.

UPVC doors are very popular as they provide a maintenance free life. They were originally only available in white but now come in a number of plain colours and also with a wood grain effect in various species, for example light oak. The doors consist of an outer frame with an insulated PVC panel in many different styles or double glazing. They do not warp or twist and when closed provide a weather proof seal with the frame.

Steel doors are particularly suitable if you require a higher level of security for your home. These doors are made from steel framing and covered with sheet steel. The core of the door can be filled with an insulating material to improve the thermal efficiency and reduce heat loss through the door. The door frame is normally made from folded steel making a very secure door set when installed. Both door and frame are usually galvanised for protection against corrosion. Steel doors can be delivered primed, ready for painting or prefinished in the factory to any colour.

Composite doors are made using glass reinforced plastic with a centre core of foam which produces doors that are very hard wearing and thermally efficient. They also do not warp or twist and are not affected by moisture. The outer face of the door can have a wood grain effect which looks very realistic. A number of colours are available and the colour is right through the outer door face and does do fade.

Most doors made these days are generally made to a high standard and perform well in varying conditions. Architects Belfast, when providing architectural services, will take into account positioning and the level of exposure on external doors and recommend suitable doors that will be perfect for the job.

Interior Folding Doors and Saving Space

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

You may have a requirement for interior doors folding to one side to save space within your home. These types of doors are quite often used for closets or wardrobes. Folding doors can be fitted into larger openings and when fully opened, almost the entire door opening is useable to gain access to the space behind. With sliding doors only about 50% of the opening is considered useable. Bedrooms can sometimes be small and full size doors that swing outwards can take up a lot of space and again the door opening is limited to the width of the door.

Sliding door systems are also quite useful when used for deciding up rooms into smaller rooms. These doors can accommodate quite large openings up to several meters. The end door can be used as an access door without the need to open up the entire facade of doors. By unlocking all the remaining doors, the entire system folds and slides to the side and stack against the wall. If the structural opening is very large, the doors may split in the middle of the opening.

Half of the doors will fold to one side and the other fold to the other. Up to 90% of the opening is then useable. This percentage could be increased by forming a recess for the doors to fit into and when stacked the outer edge of the doors are in line with the side walls. Large version of these sliding door systems are quite often found in hotel function rooms. Smaller groups can be catered for by unfolding the doors dividing up the rooms.

These internal sliding doors can be solid that provides complete privacy or contain glass. Glass doors can divide a room up but also transfer light from one room to the other even when closed.

The sliding mechanisms used for internal folding doors consist of a track mounted immediately above the doors. Rollers fixed to the top of each door slide within the track effortlessly. Another track is mounted at floor level preventing the doors from swaying back and forth and keeping all the doors in line.

Internal Folding French Doors

There are a number of different options available if you are looking to choose internal folding French doors. French doors, used internally, can divide a couple of rooms while still allowing light in. These doors are available as simple glazed pine doors or they can be found with glazed demi panels on each side. Alternatively you may prefer to go with a set of French doors with solid pine panels on either side ot the glazed doors.

Pine internal French folding doors look fabulous in their raw state, but they can also be bought already given a painted or stained finish.
