One of the most prized forms of old pottery bottles are the ginger beer bottles that were made as far back as the mid-1700s. In these early days ginger beer was an alcoholic beverage that was sweetened with honey or molasses and given additional ingredients such as ginger root and lemons for taste.

Towards the end of the 18th century ginger beer was introduced to the United States and Canada with large quantities shipped over in their stoneware bottles. These stoneware bottles were made to a very high standard using a process that was called “Improved Bristol Glaze”.

The manufacture of the bottles themselves was hand thrown by potters who made them to a rather individual standard. This resulted in some of the more unique looking bottles that are now highly prized among collectors. The bottles were slip glazed and were marked with the bottler’s name and the city in which it was made as well as the date.

With the advancement in manufacturing techniques taking over we saw the appearance of a new gray stoneware bottle. These bottles were more uniform in appearance and were stamped with various logos and designs. Along with the more precise standards to which they were made the newer bottles were also finished with a more colourful glaze and the detail of the stamped logos was also greatly enhanced as a marketing ploy to attract the eye of buyers.

One of the reasons why stoneware bottles were popularly used to store liquids such as ginger beer was because it helped to keep the contents cool. With the introduction of refrigerators as well as changes in health standards there was less need to use stoneware with a preference for glass.

At the peak of production of ginger beer there were as many as 3,000 ginger beer breweries in England and around 300 in the United States before Prohibition was signed into law. The disappearance of the breweries does not alter the fact that there are many different types of stoneware ginger beer bottles to be discovered and displayed. They make unique decorative objects with some of them commanding hefty prices that also makes them valuable works of art.

Ginger beer bottles are just as eagerly collected as the larger stoneware whiskey jugs such as those from well known distillers.
