I'd like to take a few minutes of your time to explain the different types of flooring that are most popular in todays market. All of these floors have huge upsides and if you do your research, there's no reason why you'd make the wrong choice. Listed below are the 8 most popular flooring types in todays housing market. They're not listed in any specific order, so please don't let that affect your judgement.

Bamboo flooring is a great choice. It looks nice and doesn't cost as much as hardwood. It is made from bamboo shoots, so it's not a wood, it's grass. But don't be fouled, bamboo floors are more durable then many of the hardwoods on the market. It's also very eco-friendly and easy to install.

Cork flooring can be used in children's rooms, movie rooms and musical spaces. It absorbs sounds much better that other floors and provides great acoustical benefits. It's soft to the touch and because of the cellular composition in cork flooring, it's very durable and resilient.

Wood flooring is the first choice for anyone who wants high end flooring. There is a certain level of elegance that comes with wood flooring, and they last longer than any other type of floor. You can choose from solid hardwood flooring, unfinished or pre-finished flooring, flat finished and click and lock wood flooring. The last option makes installation a breeze.

Laminate flooring will suit a starter home. It has the look of wood but comes at a much more reasonable price. It's also scratch resistant, dent resistant and very easy to install. It can be placed on top of concrete and wood sub-flooring. This is what you call a floating floor. It's not attached to the foundation or the sub-floor, but it's still very durable.

Rubber flooring is great for recreation rooms, children's rooms and exercise rooms. It's easy to clean and maintain and they also retain their sheen for many years.

Rugs are a very comfortable choice. They're soft to the touch and comfortable to walk on. Rugs can present an inviting feel and warm up any room. Area rugs can be used as a center piece on any of the above flooring and smaller rugs can accentuate your rooms décor.

Tile & stone flooring are great for their ease of maintenance and longevity. From modern to rustic homes, tile & stone can compliment any interior. The price will vary depending on what type of tile or stone you purchase. For example, ceramic tiles are cheaper than Slate.

Vinyl flooring is by far the most affordable type of flooring. You can purchase it in sheets or in tiles. Both are easy to install and come in a large variety of colors and styles.

Immerse Yourself in Darkness using Blackout Shades

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

If you're looking for a simple and relatively affordable bedroom decor tip to darken your room then you should consider installing blackout shades. Blackout shades are quite simple in terms of installation and can be used to provide near total darkness in bedrooms, home entertainment rooms and even in your kid's room to provide a dark place to nap during the day. While these systems are capable of proving complete darkness when installed correctly, they are capable of much more. In fact, they can be used to insulate the room from cold during the winter and from outside heat during the summer months. Although blackout shades can be used to enhance your overall bedroom decor, most are rather carefree in terms of maintenance.

For those looking to permanently block out light from their room, there are even blackout shades available that can be stuck to the window using adhesive tape. Shades of this type can be installed in a flash and are also relatively easy on the wallet. If you want the ability to adjust your shades then you will want to focus your search on blackout roller shades. By simply pulling a string, these type of blackout shades can be adjusted to provide darkness when needed.

Although many curtains are advertised as blackout curtains, the problem with these is that they allow light to filter in from the sides. Blackout shades, on the other hand, use a system of tracks that allows the shade to stay close to the window at all times. The track system is very small, so there is no need to worry about it becoming an eyesore. Although small amounts of light can still appear at the top and bottom of the shades, it will likely be too minor to notice. A valance system can help to block stray light from moving in toward the top of the shade system.

Your best bet when shopping for blackout shades is to head online, where you will find a great selection and unbeatable pricing. The cost for your shades will depend largely on the size of your windows and on the material you choose, so it’s important to shop around.

Keeping the Peace in a Shared Bedroom

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Sometimes it’s necessary for kids to share a room. At first, this may seem like a great arrangement. Kids enjoy sharing space, particularly when they are young and play together often. It can seem almost like having a sleepover every night. But as they get older, they may start to change their attitude toward shared space. Once they become teenagers, they will want some privacy. Older siblings also tend to have more homework and need quiet places to study and they may stay awake later at night as well, which could disturb their younger sister or brother.

If you don’t have the option of giving each sibling their own bedroom, there is a simple way to divide the space without spending a lot of money on remodeling. Perhaps you are renting and aren’t allowed to alter the structure of the room, or maybe you are anticipating the older sibling will be going to college soon and don’t want to spend the time and effort on making such a drastic change for just a few years. That is where a folding screen comes in handy. You can put one up in mere minutes and one room suddenly becomes two.

Portable room dividers are a perfect way to temporarily divide a space for very little cost. Most of them cost less than a hundred dollars and if great looks aren’t a big concern, you can even make them yourself for much less. Their portability is a big selling point. When one sibling isn’t around, the other one can move the divider out of the way to make the space feel bigger and more open. It can also be placed in another room of the house as the family’s needs change. They can also make a statement. Each person can decorate the side of the partition that is facing their half in their own style to express their personality

If your children are suddenly finding their shared bedroom a little too close for comfort, try placing a divider in the middle of the room. It is fast, cheap, and easy. It could very well restore harmony to the family and make your life a lot easier.

Interior Folding Doors and Saving Space

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

You may have a requirement for interior doors folding to one side to save space within your home. These types of doors are quite often used for closets or wardrobes. Folding doors can be fitted into larger openings and when fully opened, almost the entire door opening is useable to gain access to the space behind. With sliding doors only about 50% of the opening is considered useable. Bedrooms can sometimes be small and full size doors that swing outwards can take up a lot of space and again the door opening is limited to the width of the door.

Sliding door systems are also quite useful when used for deciding up rooms into smaller rooms. These doors can accommodate quite large openings up to several meters. The end door can be used as an access door without the need to open up the entire facade of doors. By unlocking all the remaining doors, the entire system folds and slides to the side and stack against the wall. If the structural opening is very large, the doors may split in the middle of the opening.

Half of the doors will fold to one side and the other fold to the other. Up to 90% of the opening is then useable. This percentage could be increased by forming a recess for the doors to fit into and when stacked the outer edge of the doors are in line with the side walls. Large version of these sliding door systems are quite often found in hotel function rooms. Smaller groups can be catered for by unfolding the doors dividing up the rooms.

These internal sliding doors can be solid that provides complete privacy or contain glass. Glass doors can divide a room up but also transfer light from one room to the other even when closed.

The sliding mechanisms used for internal folding doors consist of a track mounted immediately above the doors. Rollers fixed to the top of each door slide within the track effortlessly. Another track is mounted at floor level preventing the doors from swaying back and forth and keeping all the doors in line.

Internal Folding French Doors

There are a number of different options available if you are looking to choose internal folding French doors. French doors, used internally, can divide a couple of rooms while still allowing light in. These doors are available as simple glazed pine doors or they can be found with glazed demi panels on each side. Alternatively you may prefer to go with a set of French doors with solid pine panels on either side ot the glazed doors.

Pine internal French folding doors look fabulous in their raw state, but they can also be bought already given a painted or stained finish.

The Floral Designs of Cottage Style Decorating

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Cottage style decorating is often called shabby chic.  However, there are a few distinctions between the two decorating styles.  Cottage style decorating is distinguished by multiple patterns and textures with an emphasis on bold floral designs.  Among the other distinctive patterns used in the cottage style decor are the prevalence of stripes and plaid as opposed to the less patterned designs used in shabby chic decorating styles.

Of prominence in the cottage style decorating scheme is the use of large bold floral patterns.  The floral designs most often consist of large roses in various shades of pinks or reds although it is not totally uncommon to see other floral patterns consisting of relatively large floral blooms.

The pattern of floral designs usually is found in two basic colors with a third more neutral color used for background to tie the floral print to other patterns such as plaids and stripes.  Often wallpaper with unusually large flower prints will be the basis of cottage style decorating with pillow shams, throw pillows, and cushions picking up the primary colors used in the wallpaper pattern emphasizing one of the colors and the more neutral color to create stripes or plaids.

For those who may feel overwhelmed by the floral wallpaper, cottage style decorating will allow for a more subdued wall with the accent on the upholstered furniture, cushions or pillows.  In the less busy environment the floral design may be used for the upholstery on the sofa or the cushions on one or more chairs.  Occasionally, the bold floral pattern will be miniaturized within the stripes of upholstery fabrics.

In some cases cottage style decorating will use large floral prints on throw pillows that are disbursed around the room to maintain balance and the integrity of the style when the designer prefers plaids and stripes as the central pattern.

In the midst of such bold floral prints that often appear to be larger than necessary, it must be noted that the colors are bold but not necessarily as bright as those used in the shabby chic decorating style.  Cottage style decorating consists of a mixture of patterns more than the mixture of colors that often denotes shabby chic.
